Projects & Resources

We engage with hundreds of children of different backgrounds in art and music projects throughout the year, not just during the Festival fortnight. We send professional musicians, writers and artists into schools and community centres to work with and inspire young people, and we provide a platform for students' work by organising special concerts and exhibitions. Community Artwork: A Mosaic of Dales Youth

We partnered with Dales Countryside Museum and The NASH to make a spectacular 4.5 metre-wide photo mosaic celebrating youth and schools in the Upper Dales. Created with art and design studio The People’s Picture, the mosaic featured nearly 2,300 photo tiles of youth and school-life that were shared by local people of all ages, and came together to create a whole new image.

The artwork formed the centrepiece of an exhibition in the 2022 Festival at Tennants in Leyburn called The Story of Schools in the Upper Dales, which explored the education heritage of the area through fourteen themed interpretation panels and stunning photographs.

We are delighted to say that the artwork and interpretation panels are availble online. Find out about the changing journey to school, the tension between learning and earning and the life of teachers, bus drivers and school attendance officers known as ‘Kiddy Catchers’; zoom into hundreds of photos at your leisure; and listen to the podcast that was made about the project.
